The Fiesta Bowl is an annual college bowl football game held every year. It is one of four bowls that take turns hosting the national championship game of college football. Since 1982 the game has typically been played on New Year's Day.
The very first Fiesta Bowl was held on December 27, 1971, with Arizona State defeating Florida State 45-38. In 1987 the bowl pitted two undefeated teams-Penn State and Miami (Florida)-in a game that was the most watched in college football history. Penn State won 14-10 and claimed the national title. The Fiesta Bowl again hosted national champion-defining games in 1989 and 1996, and in 1999 it was the site of the first officially designated national championship game, with Tennessee defeating Florida State 23-16.
The Fiesta Bowl became part of the Bowl Championship Series back in 2000, and every four years since 2003, it's the designee for the national championship game. In January 2007, the Fiesta Bowl hosted the CFP title game, the game was moved to the Arizona Cardinals' new stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
